15: From Fibre Waste to Fertiliser

Textile and nonwovens fibre manufacturer, Lenzing Fibers has a long term commitment to sustainability in all of its activities.   It has been continually reducing waste through process optimisation and establishing new product markets though were still expecting to land fill around 400 tonnes of cellulose a year before Why Waste were able to offer help.

Stuart Gorringe Health, Safety and Environmental Manager and Bob Jeavons Technical Service Executive at Lenzing registered their cellulosic on www.whywaste.org.uk. As a result of this registration, Steve Clarke from Clarkeson Recycling, Riby got in touch.  After various tests, many discussions and finally an agreement from The Environment Agency they were able to begin composting this previously land filled waste.

Bob explained:

“The response generated by including the shredded cellulosic material on The Why Waste website was very quick and we immediately established close contact with Clarkeson Recycling.”

Lenzing Fibres now anticipate zero cellulosic (process) waste for landfill for 2010.

Bob adds:

“For both ourselves and for Clarkeson Recycling, as well as for the environment, the link between our companies by offering the waste on the Why Waste website has been extremely beneficial”
